Using exemplary films, this exhibition traces the hitherto unwritten Jewish film history of the Federal Republic of Germany.
To this day, a history of Jewish cinema in the Federal Republic of Germany remains unwritten; a comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the many different and often contradictory lives and careers of Jewish producers, directors, and actors working in the movie industry between 1945 and 1989 is yet to come. The exhibition Out of and in Focus In traces their stories through key films that shed light on the social and historical contexts prevailing at the time. This unwritten film history, with all its ruptures, harbors new perspectives on one of the most important mediums of the twentieth century and its importance in West Germany.
