Mysterious wrecks and enchanting mermaids, friendly dolphins and giant white sharks, obsessed deep-sea divers and daredevil submarine captains: filmmakers were attracted to the fantastic worlds and creatures that lurk beneath the water’s surface early on. The exhibition RAPTURES OF THE DEEP explores the tension between light and darkness, surface and depth, life and death, by means of numerous artistically designed film compilations. The show’s focus will be on the aesthetics of underwater images, their visual and acoustic richness. The exhibition space will be transformed into a shimmering blue aquarium of moving images that makes the central motifs and themes of underwater film tangible to the senses. Visitors of all ages will be fascinated by the exotic creatures and imaginative underwater boats they encounter. A sophisticated interplay of moving image, light and sound will create an audiovisual experience true to the title of the exhibition: visitors will be transported into a rapture and hold their breath, just like the diving film characters on the screens surrounding them.
