"MUSEUM" 17 August to 12 January 2020 at the MUSEUM MMK

A museum of the present must always be a different museum. In a time of constant change and the attending sense of powerlessness, the exhibition Museum seeks to open up and occupy new spaces.

The mission of the museum changed in the late 1960s, only to undergo major redefinition again in the 1980s and '90s. In those decades, justified criticism targeted first the heritage of the civic museum as rooted in the nineteenth century, and later the liberalized and market-compliant institution that was compelled to demonstrate its contemporaneity and relevance on the basis of new, measurable criteria. With works from the collection, loans and new productions, the exhibition Museum strives to unfurl the current scope of art and thus of the museum of the present. Gestures of configuration, transformation and transgression here aid in the endeavour to conceive of – and make perceivable – the 'other' as a possibility.
