The open architecture of the Museum highlights its theme and objective: making the function of communication transparent. The subject matter of the permanent exhibition under the title “Media tell stories” ranges from the beginnings of communication to our modern information society.

The Museum's diversified pedagogic programme, with workshops, guided tours and the regularly supervised Children's Workshop are particularly interesting for families and school classes. In the Media Workshop computer experts and beginners can surf through the global village and enjoy the fascination of internet. The art collection, including works by Carl Spitzweg, Max Ernst, Joseph Beuys and Salvador Dali, manifests the preoccupation with the subject of communication. Attractive changing exhibitions on diverse aspects illuminate the depth of the communication theme.

The Museum was established in 1958 as the Federal Post Museum in a patrician villa on the Museum Riverbank. It was extended in 1990 by a new building designed by the renowned Stuttgart architect Günter Behnisch. Today, the villa houses the administration and the extensive library. The foundation Museumsstiftung Post und Telekommunikation owns the Museum.
