SOLASTALGIA

9 Octobre 2025 - 15 February 2026
MGGU – Museum Giersch der Goethe-Universität

Landscapes are subject to constant change, which is particularly rapid and destructive in times of climate change. Can landscapes be beautiful and endangered at the same time? The exhibition explores the ambivalence of mourning and consolation, of beautiful and damaged landscapes, and our divided relationship to the environment. The contradictory nature of our relationship with nature is reflected in the term Solastalgia , which was coined by the Australian philosopher Glenn Albrecht in 2005. It describes the feeling of a painful longing for a disappearing landscape that is perceived as home in the face of climate change. Solastalgia implies sadness and melancholy about the irreversible loss as well as comfort and affection.

With this exhibition, the Giersch Museum at Goethe University is celebrating its 25th anniversary as well as its 10-year affiliation with the university. Historical landscape paintings from the 18th to the early 20th century from the GIERSCH collection form the starting point, enriched by university research perspectives.
